Preparing Your Fire TV for Apps
Once you’ve spent the necessary time setting up your device properly, it’s time to install some Fire TV apps. But before we talk about the apps themselves, you need to prep your Fire TV device.
Why? Because you will need to sideload some of the apps we discuss; they are not available in the Amazon Appstore.
To make sure you can install sideloaded apps on your device, you need to change two settings.
- ADB Debugging: To enable ADB debugging, head to Settings > Device > Developer Options > ADB Debugging and select On.
- Unknown Sources: To allow apps from unknown sources to be installed on your Fire Stick, go to Settings > Device > Developer Options > Apps From Unknown Sources and select On.

1. Downloader
Downloader is an essential tool if you’re planning to sideload Fire TV apps onto your device.
The app lets you download APK files directly from the internet and then install them on your Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick. It means you won’t need to use a PC or network connection to transfer the file.
Theoretically, Downloader doesn’t require any setup. However, it’s worth ensuring JavaScript is turned on. Open the app, select Settings in the left-hand panel, and mark the checkbox next to Enable JavaScript.
2. ES File Explorer
ES File Explorer is the other common method for getting APK files onto your device so you can sideload them.
Although the app (deservedly) has a reputation for being a bloated mess on Android, on Amazon Fire devices it runs well, and it’s easy to use (at least for the purpose of downloading APKs). You just need to enter a URL and the app will take care of the rest.
Naturally, given the app is a file explorer, you can also use it to browse your storage.
3. Mouse Toggle
Although you can sideload just about any app on your Fire TV or Fire TV Stick, many of them have not been adapted for the TV screen. They still require finger taps and other gestures to navigate them.
The solution is to install a mouse pointer. The best is Mouse Toggle. With a double-tap of your remote’s Play button, you can launch an on-screen mouse icon. You can control it using your remote’s D-pad.
To install the app, enter http://tinyurl.com/firetvmouse into the aforementioned Downloader or use the Google Play app linked above. 4. Plex
Plex surely needs no introduction. Along with Kodi, it’s one of the best ways to stream your locally saved media to other screens and devices around your home. Unlike Kodi—which we will discuss next—Plex is one of the Fire TV apps available through the Amazon Appstore, thus making installation a breeze.
5. Kodi
Kodi is Plex’s biggest competitor. Both apps have pros and cons, but broadly speaking, Kodi is more customizable but requires more maintenance.
As we just mentioned, Kodi is not available in the Amazon Appstore. You will need to sideload it onto your device.

6. Firefox
If you want to watch YouTube on your Fire device, you need to install a browser app.
The issue dates back to a 2017 argument between Amazon and Google. The same argument is responsible for the lack of Google products (such as Chromecast) in the Amazon store.
Most long-term Fire users agree that there are only two browsers worth considering: Firefox and Silk.
If you already use Firefox on your other machines—or you value open source software—this is the browser you should install.
7. Silk Browser
Because you can sideload apps, you can install any browser you want, including Chrome. But Silk is more popular.
In case you’re not aware, Silk is Amazon’s in-house browser and has been specially designed to work on Amazon Fire devices.
It lets you control web videos and music using your remote’s Play, Pause, and Skip buttons, and offers lots of standard browser features like a password manager and browsing history.
8. Netflix
We can’t write a list of best Fire TV apps without mentioning Netflix.
With over 100,000 hours of content and 50,000 TV shows and movies (at the time of writing), you don’t really need to pay for anything else—especially once you realize that sports fanatics and news nerds can still get their fix for free5 Free Streaming News Channels for Cord-Cutters5 Free Streaming News Channels for Cord-CuttersOne of the biggest drawbacks of canceling cable TV is the availability of news. Or lack thereof. Thankfully, things are changing, and here are now plenty of free news channels for cord-cutters.Read More after they’ve cut the cord. The company’s services are not free. But having looked fully at the price of Netflix, we think it represents good value for money.
9. Euronews
Remember we just said news nerds could get their fix for free? Euronews makes it possible.
Euronews is a collaboration between a group of 23 European and North African national broadcasters, including ITN, RAI, RTE, and VGTRK.
It was founded in 1993 and has since grown to offer free news in 156 countries and in 12 European and Middle Eastern languages.
The channels for four languages—English, Dutch, Hungarian, and Turkish—are available for Amazon Fire devices. The non-English channels are a fantastic resource if you’re trying to learn another language.
10. Haystack TV
Let’s stick with the theme of news. Haystack TV is another option for you to consider.
Unlike Euronews, it does not offer live TV. Instead, it aggregates clips from hundreds of reputable online sources to deliver you videos about the topics you’re interested in.
The more you watch the app and rate the videos and topics it shows you, the more it learns about which sources you enjoy and which subjects you care about.
11. TuneIn Radio
Televisions aren’t only for watching stuff. They’re also for listening to stuff.
One of the best ways to fill your ears with music is to install TuneIn Radio. Although Spotify also offers an Amazon Fire app, you need to have a premium membership. TuneIn Radio is entirely free for all users.
As you probably already know, TuneIn provides access to 100,000 radio stations from around the world, along with four million on-demand programs.
12. VLC
We end the list of best Fire TV apps with VLC Player. But why would you need VLC on a Fire TV or Fire TV Stick?
There are two primary reasons:
- Often apps that give access to illegal content need a third-party video player to display their content.
- You can use VLC to watch content saved on another local device using your home network.
Explaining the process for using VLC to stream locally saved media is beyond the scope of this article. You’ll just have to take our word that it’s a must-have app!

You can use Android Debug Bridge (adb) to connect your development computer to an Amazon Fire TV device or stick for installing, testing, and debugging your apps. Before you use adb, you must enable debugging on your Fire TV device, and set up adb on your computer. Follow the steps below.
Note:Android Debug Bridge is provided by the Android Open Source Project, not by Amazon.
Fire Stick Utility App
Step A. Enable Debugging on Amazon Fire TV
You must enable both adb and debugging on your Fire TV device before you can connect to it:
- From the main screen of your Fire TV, select Settings.
- Select My Fire TV > Developer Options.
- Turn on ADB Debugging.
- Turn on Apps from Unknown Sources.
- (Optional) If your Fire TV supports USB, and you plan to connect your computer to your Fire TV device using a USB cable, turn on USB Debugging. Note that when USB Debugging is enabled, the USB port is unavailable for other uses such as external storage or input devices. To re-enable the USB port, turn off USB debugging.)
Step B. Set Up Android Debug Bridge
Android Debug Bridge (adb) is a command-line utility for running and managing Android apps on your device or emulator. adb is available when you install Android Studio, but Windows users will need to install a special USB driver.
You can check to make sure adb is installed in Android Studio by going to Tools > SDK Manager. Click the SDK Tools tab. Select and install Android SDK Platform-Tools (if it's not already selected).
Apple Tv App For Mac
No action is required for adb to work on Mac OS X.
If you're on Windows and want to connect your computer to Fire TV through a USB cable, you need to install a special USB driver to connect your computer to a Fire TV device through adb. The driver supports all the Fire TV platforms. To install the driver:
- Download the USB file and extract the zip file's contents.
- Double-click the FireDevices_Drivers.
- Complete the installation dialog boxes as prompted.
Note: The USB driver is only certified through Windows 8.1. If you're on Windows 10, you will need to explicitly accept that you are installing from an 'un-certified source.'
Step C. Add Android Debug Bridge to Your Path
You need to add adb to your PATH so you can more easily execute adb commands. (Your PATH is an environment variable used to specify the location of the program's executable. If you don't add adb to your PATH, running adb commands will require you to browse to the
<Android SDK>/platform-tools
directory to run adb.)Tip: You can check whether adb is already added to your PATH by typing
adb version
from a terminal. If you get back version information, then adb
is in your PATH.To add adb to your PATH on Mac:
- Get the path to your Android SDK platform-tools directory:
- Open Android Studio and click the SDK Manager button .The location to your Android SDK appears near the top next to Android SDK Location. For example:
/Users/<your username>/Library/Android/sdk
If this is your first time opening Android Studio, there isn't an SDK Manager button. Instead, at the Welcome to Android Studio prompt, click Configure > SDK Manager and provide the location to the Android SDK. - Copy the path to the SDK and paste it somewhere convenient, such as a text editor.
- Add /platform-tools to the end of the path you copied in the previous step. ('platform-tools' is the directory containing the
adb
executable.) - Copy the full path to your clipboard.
- Use the following command to add adb to your .bash_profile. Replace
<your username>
with your actual username. Also, make sure the path points to your Android SDK.Your.bash_profile
file is usually in your user directory, which you can find by typingcd ~
(change to your user directory). Then typels -a
(list all) to show all files, including hidden ones.If the file isn't there, simply create one. You can then typeopen .bash_profile
to see the paths listed. After you add this PATH to your bash profile, you should see the following in your.bash_profile
file:(Only instead ofjohndoe
, you will see your own username.) - Fully restart any terminal sessions, and then type adb. If you successfully added adb to your path, you will see adb help info rather than 'command not found.'
To add adb to your PATH on Windows:
- Get the path to your Android SDK platform-tools directory:
- Open Android Studio and click the SDK Manager button .The location to your Android SDK appears near the top next to Android SDK Location. For example:
C:Users<your user name>AppDataLocalAndroidSdkplatform-tools
If this is your first time opening Android Studio, there isn't an SDK Manager button. Instead, at the Welcome to Android Studio prompt, click Configure > SDK Manager and provide the location to the Android SDK. - Copy the path to the SDK and paste it somewhere convenient, such as a text editor.
- Add /platform-tools to the end of the path you copied in the previous step. ('platform-tools' is the directory containing the
adb
executable.) - Copy the full path to your clipboard.
- Click Start and type view advanced system settings in the search box.
- Click View advanced system settings.
- When the System Settings dialog opens, click the Environment Variables button.
- Under System Variables (the lower pane), select Path and click Edit.
- Do one of the following:
- On Windows 7 or 8, move your cursor to the farthest position on the right, type
;
and then press Ctrl+V to insert the path to your SDK that you copied earlier. It may look like this:;C:Users<your user name>AppDataLocalAndroidSdkplatform-tools
. Click OK on each of the three open dialog boxes to close them. - On Windows 10, click the New button and add this location.
- On Windows 7 or 8, move your cursor to the farthest position on the right, type
- Restart any terminal sessions, and then type adb. If you successfully added adb to your path, you will see adb help info rather than 'command not found.'
Step D: Connect to a Fire TV device through adb
You can connect to adb either through the network or through USB. Most Fire TV devices only allow network connections, so this is the more common approach.
Amazon Firetv Utility App For Mac
With this option, you connect using either a wired Ethernet or wireless network connection. Both your computer and the Fire TV device must be on the same network for a network adb connection to work. All Fire TV devices offer the option to connect wirelessly.
- Make sure your Fire TV device and your computer are on the same network. You can use either a wifi network or a wired network. You can check the network your Fire TV is on by going to Settings > Network.
- Now get the IP address of your network. From Settings, go to My Fire TV > About > Network. (Some Fire TV models might say 'Device' instead of 'My Fire TV.') Make a note of the IP address listed on this screen.Warning: This is somewhat unintuitive, but you do not get the IP address from the Settings > Network screen. There's another Network screen under Settings > Device > About > Network that shows the IP address. Don't confuse the two network screens.
- Open a terminal window. On a Mac, you can open Terminal by pressing Cmd + spacebar and then typing Terminal. On Windows, you open the Command Prompt usually by typing cmd in your program search. (The exact steps vary based on your Windows version.)
- Run the following command, where
<ipaddress>
is the IP address of the Fire TV device noted in the previous section:For example:Note: Make sure you added adb to your PATH, as described in Add Android Debug Bridge to Your Path. Otherwise you will need tocd
to the platform-tools directory first and use./adb
on a Mac oradb
on Windows to runadb
commands. The first time you runadb connect
, Fire TV will show a screen that says 'Allow USB debugging?'If you don't allow USB debugging, Fire TV won't authorize the adb connection. Select the Always allow from this computer check box, and then click OK.If the adb connection was successful, adb responds with the message:If you need to stop or restart the server, use these adb commands: - Verify that the Fire TV device appears in the list of devices:adb responds with a message like this:(where
10.49.172.51
is your IP address.)
If the serial number does not appear after running
adb devices
, or you get a message saying unable to connect
, you will need to troubleshoot adb.Tip: You don't always need to kill and start the server with adb. Usually you can just run the
adb connect <ipaddress>
command.Note: This option is available only for Fire TV devices that have a USB port — namely, Fire TV (Gen 1 and 2), both of which are unavailable in Appstores.
To connect your computer to Fire TV (Gen 1 or 2) through USB, you need an A-to-A USB cable. Note that you must have a Fire TV Gen 1 or Gen 2 device, not a Fire TV Stick, Fire TV (Gen 3), or Fire TV Edition, because only Fire TV (Gen 1 and Gen 2) have a port for the USB cable. If your Fire TV device doesn't offer a USB cable port, use the Network Connect option instead.
- If you're on Windows, install the USB driver as described in Set Up Android Debug Bridge.
- Turn on USB debugging. See the section on Enable Debugging on Amazon Fire TV. (Go to Settings. Then select My Fire TV > Developer Options. Then turn on USB Debugging.
- Connect your Fire TV to a USB port on your computer.
- Run the following commands:
After the last command, adb responds with the following message, where
<serialno>
is the serial number of the device:If you run into issues connecting to adb, see these troubleshooting tips.
Troubleshooting
If you receive a message such as the following:
or
Amazon Fire Tv Utility App Download For Mac
try doing the following to resolve the issue:
- Make sure both Fire TV and your computer are using the same network.
- When connecting wireless with
adb connect <ipaddress>
, make sure you're typing the IP address correctly, with all the required dots.
- Close Android Studio and any other emulators or USB cable connections.
- Kill (
adb kill-server
) and restart (adb start-server
) the server. - Restart Fire TV (Settings > Device [or System] > Restart).
- Restart your router.
- See if another service is blocking adb.
